In the 1880s Alexander MacKay's water-powered Grist Mill was responsible for grinding wheat, oats, barley, rye and buckwheat. Being only one of a few mills in the area the Balmoral Grist Mill provided critically important supplies of flour and oatmeal. Today it is one of the few operating mills left in the province. From his parlour window, William D. Lawrence could watch his bustling shipyard on the shore of Cobequid Bay. The largest full-rigged ship in Canada, also named William D. In 1816 William Ross, an army captain, and his wife Mary arrived with 172 disbanded soldiers to settle in the interior of N.S. The 60-acre site includes a vintage store, farmhouse, barns and workshops, village school, a blacksmith's shop and a cooper's shop.
