Capitvated by history and frozen in time, Lunenburg's dedication to preserving its rich heritage hasn't hindered its ability to propel into the future. Formally established in 1753, Lunenburg is located on the shores of the Atlantic Ocean, approximately 88 km (55 mi) east of Halifax. An unwavering commitment to preserving many of its century-old buildings, like the Fink Holder House and the Koch-Solomon House, has earned “Old Town” Lunenburg the distinction of becoming the second of two urban communities in North America to be named a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. In 1921, Lunenburg exerted its mastery in shipbuilding, when Canada's famous tall ship, the Bluenose, was introduced at Lunenburg's harbour. The proud sails of the Bluenose II, an exact replica of the original, can frequently be seen at its home port in town, attracting much adoration. Most likely inspired by their surroundings, many artisans make their home here, contributing to Lunenburg's healthy cultural scene.
